Previous Programs
“I loved taking part in this program, I loved meeting the women in the group and making new friends. My favourite thing about the program was going home with new recipes to try and show my family as well.”
Home Comforts Cooking
Home Comforts was a 5-week cooking program for women from refugee & asylum-seeker communities to come together to teach & share traditional recipes from their home countries. We ran this program a number of times throughout 2022-2024.
Home Comforts provided the opportunity for women to gain a recgonised REHIS certificate whilst learning more about one another’s cultures, building friendships & integrating in the community. Each week different women would share a traditional recipe from their culture/ home country and teach the group how to make it, whhilst also sharing memories of cooking the dish throughout their ives and where they learned it etc.
Home Comforts was a great program which encouraged women to learn from each other and try new food. Friendships were made and lots of delicious homemade food was eaten!
“I enjoyed sharing my own recipes with different people from different cultures as well as getting to know about them too. Great opportunity to meet people. Loved working in the kitchen especially with lots of help & talk”.
Let's Grow!
Funded by The Centre for Population Health and supported by Glasgow University, this 5-week program aimed to encourage women in Govan to get involved with gardening and growing, whilst learning more about sustainability and biodiversity. We wanted to build on the work we had already completed during our Waste to Wishes and Climate Sisters project, as well as engaging with local climate focused groups.
Throughout the program we visited various local groups and learned different skills- at the end of the program, participants were given their own window boxes to encourage them to continue growing in their own spaces.
“I enjoyed learning about all the different fruits and vegetables being grown… and understanding how simple it is to grow your own at home”.
“I loved it – so interesting! Especially learning how to sort and store seeds properly and learning about the harvesting and growing cycle”.

Redressed: Sewing & Upcycling Program
Redressed was a sewing & swap shop project, funded by the Naturesave Fund, for women to learn upcycling skills including repairing & mending textiles and clothes in order to give items new life & reduce landfill waste.
Additionally, community swap shop events were organised for women to share and swap unwanted clothing for other items, again to encourage reusing & upcycling textiles reducing the environmental impacts of landfill.

My Art
My Art was a supportive expressive art program for women to develop a collage or personal portfolio depicting their journeys and achievements throughout the program.
Participants learned about different art forms including painting, music, sculpture and photography, creative writing etc. and focused on building confidence and connections within the community as well as improving self-esteem/mental well-being.
The program particularly encouraged women from refugee and asylum seeker/new scots communities to join who experience barriers to opportunities. My art provided a safe and culturally sensitive space to take part in creative activities that allowed participants to express themselves in a non-judgmental, supportive place with others who empathise and support one another. This helped to break down barriers through understanding and trust, building new friendships, skills, confidence, creativity and positive mental wellbeing as well as greater community integration and cohesion.
